Chamundeshwari Temple on top of Chamundi Hills can be reached by road from Mysore city. This is about 13 km drive. You can travel in your private vehicles as well as public transport buses operated by Karnataka government run KSRTC.
The Chamundi hill name after goddess Chamundi is about 1000 meters high from sea level and can also reached by steps (Around 1000 steps)
Temple is built for Chamundeshwari or Durga, the goddess who in a battle killed the bad king ( Rakshasa) Mahishasura on whom the city is named(Maisuru/Mysuru/Mysore) to bring good to the city. She is the tutelary deity of the Mysore Maharajas and the presiding deity of Mysore. It has an history of more than 1000 years. It is old richest antique temple. Were the Maharaja of mysuru presented the costliest emerald chain to the god chamundi temple. The cost of emerald chain is estimated as selling the whole mysore city 3 times of money.
Darshana and Pooja Timings: 7.30 a.m to 2 p.m and 3.30 to 6 p.m and 7.30 p.m to 9 p.m.
Abhisheka Timings : 6 a.m. to 7.30 a.m and 6 p.m to 7.30 p.m | Friday 5 a.m to 6.30 a.m.
Dasoha (free meals) is arranged to devotees daily 12.30 p.m to 2.30 p.m.
If you are planning to visit the temple from Nanjangud side after visiting Ooty / Nanjangud / Bandipur / Wayanad ec., there is another road.
Mysore Maharajas are know to be great patrons & are credited for the current form of the temple.
There are varieties of trees, birds and animals in the hills. Sighting of leopard by nearby residential areas is a regular news.
The view from the road or steps is unforgettable. The view of Lalith Mahal palace (Which is now a star hotel) is splendid.
The Mahishasura statue on top of the hill is a great attraction especially for the kids. The Nandi statue on the way to the temple is he other attraction.
